Effective communication between coach and athlete is a key ingredient to successful training. As technology changes, the ways in which we keep in touch is different. The TrainingPeaks platform provides one such avenue, as an easy way for both of us to comment on individual workouts. So that we do not lose sight of the forest for the trees, monthly conversations give us the chance to take a step back and assess progress toward larger goals and make sure that you understand why you have nine 50 seconds sprints on Tuesday night.

Before each of these conversations, I assess and summarize the data from the previous month. To make this as effective and efficient as possible for both of us, I set up an on-line scheduling tool, reducing the email or text tag we would play if we relied simply on the thought, “Call me when you can.” This scheduling tool helps me set aside quality time for our conversation.
